Creative agency with social mission launches in Plymouth

A brand new creative agency, offering high quality design AND opportunities for aspiring creatives, has opened in Plymouth.

Founded by Troy Woodhouse, Gammaray Creative is the city’s first design agency with a social mission. Formerly a partner at local marketing agency Real Fusion, Troy’s new venture will see him operating a commercial creative business – offering design, branding and marketing strategy – which will subsidise the help and support he is committed to providing to young designers, as well as unemployed people looking to start a career in graphic design but don’t know where to turn.

The idea for a creative agency with a social mission was born out of seeing talented young people coming out of graphic design courses but without the industry experience and commercial know how to build a career or set up their own business.

Speaking of his new venture Troy Woodhouse, MD of Gammaray Creative said: “Having worked as a professional designer for 14 years, I pride myself on delivering high quality creative and branding work for local businesses, but having been increasingly involved in the city’s social enterprise scene, I know I can offer much more than that.

“Design courses do a great job teaching the basic principles of graphic design but they don’t adequately equip people with the principles of business and that’s where young designers can really struggle.  The reality of life as a commercial designer – producing high quality work with small budgets, to tight deadlines – can be a real shock for young designers coming straight out of education into the work place, making it hard for them to find and retain jobs.

“I want my design business to make a real difference to young people, so as well as offering the full suite of services you would expect from a creative agency, Gammaray Creative will offer placements and work experience opportunities for young designers, supporting them to develop crucial commercial mentality and professional studio practice in the early days of their careers.”

The courses will also be open to unemployed people interested in a career in graphic design but don’t have the confidence to start. The courses will be tailor-made to either design students or unemployed people as their individual requirements differ.

Currently one of the 15% of SMEs in the UK with a social mission*, Troy’s intention is for Gammaray to become a fully-fledged social enterprise – the Social Enterprise City’s first true social enterprise design agency – with a structured programme of activity and support in the Gammaray studio outside of commercial trading hours, as well as offering people the opportunity to gain experience working on live briefs, shadowing Troy while he works.

Trained at Kingston University, Troy’s 14 year career has seen him deliver creative for global clients including UEFA Champions League, The Fox Network, BBC, AIG and Chinese Central Television. Local and regional business include Wrigleys, Ginsters, RIO, and The Blurt Foundation.
